The Institute of Chemistry held the recognition rites for the BS Chemistry and MS Chemistry graduating class of 2026 at the UP Diliman School of Statistics Auditorium on July 4, 2026.
Fifty-three (53) BS Chemistry and seventeen (17) MS Chemistry graduates were honored in this event. The graduates were each called on stage and received the Institute of Chemistry pins with the help of their parents and loved ones. Medals were given to the 6 magna cum laude and 17 cum laude honor recipients in this year’s graduating class. Axel Labing-isa led the magna cum laude honor graduates with a weighted average grade of 1.2932.
Several special awards were also accorded to notable students. The overall Undergraduate Thesis award was given to Curt Aruta for his thesis entitled “Ring-Truncated Deguelin Derivatives as Potential C-Terminal Heat Shock Protein 90 (Hsp90) Inhibitors”. His thesis adviser is Dr. Monissa Paderes. Other specific Undergraduate Thesis awardees include Elle Sue Jamayo and Robin Ace Pring. Louise Francine de la Viga received the Amando Clemente Memorial Award for demonstrating a balance of academic excellence and service to the University and to the community at large. The Dr. Leon Payawan Award was conferred to Francis Angelo Dominguez for his commendable research work on a nanocomposite sensor.
The guest speaker for the ceremony is ADMU Professor Emeritus and NAST Academician Dr. Fabian Dayrit. He highlighted the important role of chemists in society and that chemists can help solve tomorrow’s problems as well as prevent these problems from being created in the first place.
